Update: Russian forces had virtually surrounded Ukraine in mid-February, according to data from Rochan Consulting. Tracking Russian troop movements became more difficult using satellite images, so this page is no longer being updated.

While Russian President Vladimir Putin denies plans to launch an attack, as of Feb. 16, Russian forces had virtually surrounded Ukraine, according to data from Rochan Consulting, an independent analytical group based in Gdansk, Poland, that tracks military movements using satellite images. An estimated more than 130,000 troops have concentrated in the country’s south, east and north.
In contradicting accounts this week, Moscow said it had partially withdrawn troops from the border, while U.S. officials say the Kremlin added more troops and weapons to the area. New military presences have been spotted Monday in Crimea and Wednesday near Kharkiv, a city analysts have warned could be the first line of defense against a potential Russian attack.
